😋 An original Mexican cocktail recipe
The traditional margarita is an alcoholic cocktail made with tequila, fine salt, triple sec and lime, to which ice cubes or crushed ice are added. Here, I've chosen to twist it into a slightly fruitier, sweeter version. Discover my margarita recipe!
Do you know the origins of the margarita? Invented during Prohibition by an American named Margaret Sames (whose nickname was Margarita), we all think this cocktail is Mexican. But that's a mistake: because of the prohibition of alcohol at that time, many Americans crossed the border to open bars in Mexico… hence the idea that the margarita originated there.
💙 Why you'll love this recipe
- It's super simple to make
- It requires only a handful of ingredients
- It's express: ready in just 5 minutes
🧊 What ingredients do you need?
Here are the ingredients you'll need to prepare this recipe. Quantities can be found in the recipe card at the end of this article.
- Tequila: a spirit from Mexico
- Triple sec: if you're wondering what triple sec is, it's an orange peel liqueur found in many cocktails. You can replace it with Cointreau.
- Lime juice
- Passion fruit nectar: I usually use Alain Millat's*.
- Sugar syrup: used in many cocktails, I really recommend using this rather than real sugar, as it blends much better into the cocktail and really makes a difference.
- Ice cubes: you can leave them as they are, or use them as crushed ice.
- Passion fruit
- Herbs: mint and rosemary
- Brown sugar: for decoration
🧐 How do you make a traditional margarita?
It's super-simple: you wet the rim of the glass with a lemon wedge, dip the glass in salt and then just add the ingredients. You can then add the ice cubes or blend them in a blender to make crushed ice.
I prefer to replace the salt with brown sugar and add sugar syrup, passion fruit and herbs, to create a sweeter, grassier margarita.
💡 Frequently Asked Questions
Salt is always used to enhance the taste of our food, and the same goes for drinks. Salt is also used to cover up the bad taste of mediocre tequila: half of Mexicans live below the poverty line, so not everyone can afford a good one, and it's a very common cocktail in the country.
It's an orange peel liqueur. It is used in many cocktails, such as the Black Jack or the Cosmopolitan. You can replace it with Cointreau.
Yes, of course, you can prepare it 24 hours in advance. The longer the cocktail macerates, the better the taste.
Refrigerate for about a day.
