🍫Ingredients
You can find a full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below. Here are a few ingredient notes to make these delicious hot chocolate bombs.
- Dark chocolate - completely replaceable by milk chocolate or chocolate chips (semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, etc...). Use fairtrade if possible and discover the Eco Tips I wrote about chocolate!
- Cocoa powder - I love to use Dutch-processed, as it's super rich and flavorful, but you can use anything you like actually!
🍬How to customize it
Feel free to change this recipe or to mix different flavors. I suggest several options:
- Mini marshmallows
- Candy canes
- Christmas sprinkles or holiday sprinkles
- Peppermint bark
- Coconut milk to replace regular cow milk.
- Snowman hot chocolate bombs - replace dark chocolate by white chocolate to make white chocolate shell s. Then use black and orange markers to decorate.
- Homemade hot chocolate mix
This recipe has not been tested using any other substitutions. If you do try substituting ingredients, it may not turn out as it's meant to. Please leave a comment below letting me know if it worked out!
✨How to make this hot chocolate bomb recipe?
Recipe details and quantities are in the recipe card below.
I made this recipe during my Christmas Advent calendar, which is why there are all those Christmas decorations in the process shots below.
- Place half your chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water (double boiler).
- Let chocolate melts on low heat.
- Once melted, place the chocolate in your silicone sphere mold and spread well with the back of a spoon, making sure to get the melted chocolate all the way to the top.
- Place the mould in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes or until hard.
- Meanwhile, repeat the process by melting the remaining chocolate with a double boiler.
- When melted, take the bowl out of the pan of hot water and let it cool at room temperature for 5-15 minutes - it must be barely warm but still melted.
- Spread it to the molds with the back of a spoon. And put it back to the refrigerator for 15-20 more minutes or until hard.
- Unmould very gently and fill half of the spheres with 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder (see how to customize it above) and a bit of mini marshmallows.
- Heat a microwave-safe plate. Take one empty half-sphere and place it on the hot plate for a few seconds.
- The edges will melt slightly and you can place it on another half-sphere. Repeat until all the spheres are sealed.
- For chocolate decorations, place the remaining melted chocolate in a pipping bag (no pipping tip needed), cut the end off just a little and drizzle on top of the bombs.
- Add edible (Christmas or not) decorations.
- When ready to eat, heat a large cup of hot milk (must be burning hot) and place the chocolate bomb in it. Let it melt, stir well and enjoy!
👩🏻🍳 Chef's tips
- Use the double boiler method - place a pan of hot water on low heat and add a bowl that fits the pan diameter (it shouldn't fall inside of the pan) on it. Then place your chocolate and let it melt slowly. There's no need to rush this, or you might burn your chocolate.
- Prefer the back of a spoon to a pastry brush, which will prevent holes in your bombs.
- Make two layers of chocolate - I've seen many Tik Tok videos where people only make one single layer of chocolate. I tried it three times and every time, it failed. So I really recommend you to take a little more time and make two layers of chocolate. That way, you'll be sure to get your chocolate bombs right and perfectly round.
❄️ Storage
Store your bombs in an airtight container at room temperature (unless it's very warm at your place. In this case, let them cool completely and place them in a airtight container in the fridge).
Chocolate can keep for several weeks, but look carefully at the consumption date of your garnishes (marshmallows, caramels, etc...).
